Patriots to work on ex-Bears WR/PR Dazz Newsome (report)
There could be a late entrant in the battle for New England’s wide receiver roster.
Patriots welcome ex-Bears away from Dazz Newsome for practice on Sunday, according to PFF’s Doug Kyed. Newsome was cut by Chicago earlier this week and has already visited the Titans, so he will have other suitors too.
The Bears’ 2021 sixth-round pick, Newsome broke his collarbone last June and opened the season on Chicago’s practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster to appear in three games last season, catching two assists.
However, Newsome did a little something on special teams, returning six punts for 75 yards (12.5 average). It wasn’t just good feedback to skew the small sample size either; four out of six traveled more than 10 meters.
Listed at 5-foot-10, 184 pounds, Newsome played his NCAA football in North Carolina and posted a 4.57-second 40-yard dash and 7.39-second three-cone drill at the NFL Combine. He also returned punts in college.
The Patriots apparently have quite a few spots on the roster locked at wide receiver, between Jakobi Meyers, Nelson Agholor, DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne and Tyquan Thornton. But with Thornton likely starting the season on injured reserve with a collarbone injury, there could be another squeaky wide on the active roster. Right now, Lil’ Jordan Humphrey looks like the leader of the clubhouse.
Is there really a chance that Kendrick Bourne will be eliminated by the Patriots? (Mailbag)
